Atlanta CNN —Baltimore filed a legal claim on Monday against the owner and manager of the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge last month, causing it to collapse. The Dali, a 213-million-pound ship carrying cargo containers, is owned by Grace Ocean Private Limited and managed by Synergy Marine PTE LTD. As this matter is now the subject of active litigation, we will reserve further comment for the appropriate judicial forum,” the Baltimore City Law Office told CNN. Earlier this month, Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine filed a petition in federal court asking for a $43.6 million limit on potential liability payouts. In its Monday court filings, Baltimore asked the court to deny the companies’ petition to limit liability.

Baltimore City Fire Boat 2 floats past the Dali container vessel after it struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The collapse of a major Baltimore bridge and its knock-on effects could result in the biggest-ever marine insurance payout, the chair of insurance giant Lloyd's of London said on Thursday. I don't at this point anticipate that it's outside our realistic disaster scenario planning. It feels like a a very substantial loss, potentially the largest-ever marine insured loss, but not outside parameters that we plan for." Carnegie-Brown added that, while there would clearly be claims for the ship, cargo and the bridge, it is "second-order impacts" that would become "substantial."

NTSB crews used the ship’s voyage data recorder, or VDR, to piece together a rough timeline of events leading up to the collision. (AP) — A former top prosecutor for the city of Baltimore was convicted Tuesday on one count of mortgage fraud, concluding a lengthy criminal trial in which Marilyn Mosby testified she unwittingly made false statements on loan applications to buy two Florida vacation homes. The jury announced a split verdict Tuesday evening after deliberating most of the day, finding Mosby not guilty on a second mortgage fraud charge, The Baltimore Sun reported. Her mortgage fraud trial, which began in mid-January, was moved from Baltimore to Greenbelt, Maryland, over concerns potential jurors may have been biased by extensive media coverage of the case. Mosby’s failure to disclose that debt on her loan applications contributed to the mortgage fraud charges, according to prosecutors. In the perjury case, a different jury found Mosby lied about suffering financial losses so she could withdraw money from her retirement account.

AdvertisementUsing 'subject-to' financing to bypass a down payment and inherit a low interest rateWhile researching creative financing, Casey learned more and more about "subject-to loans," when the buyer takes over the existing financing. This was a major advantage for Casey, who didn't have much cash on hand when she was looking to buy her second property. Another benefit of subject-to for the buyer, especially in a high-interest-rate environment, is that they could inherit a low interest rate. In Casey's case, she inherited the seller's 4.5% rate when rates were hovering around 8%, she said.

Ultimately, that attribute led the 44-year-old to a career she never imagined: a real-estate agent and investor. Until she started her first job as a paralegal at one of the biggest law firms in New York City, that is. Becoming a real-estate agent satisfied both of those criteria. Casey started bringing in $2,350 a month, which the government covered for her tenant. BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal judge has denied a compassionate release request filed by a former Baltimore police officer convicted in 2018 as part of the department’s Gun Trace Task Force corruption scandal. Daniel Hersl, the oldest member of the deeply corrupt and now-disbanded Baltimore police unit, was sentenced to 18 years behind bars after a jury found him guilty of racketeering and robbery. Last month, he filed the request for release, saying he was recently diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes, liver, lungs and more. He said a prison doctor concluded he has less than 18 months to live, and asked for home detention. Hersl, 53, was one of eight indicted members of the once-lauded Gun Trace Task Force, which was created to get illegal guns off the streets of a city plagued by violent crime.

It's a system designed to identify potential — whether one's destination is a public university or a prestigious private college.
